Psathyrella longistriata is distinctive because it is one of a small number of psathyrellas with veils that persist as a membranous ring on the stipe. The cap is quite variable in color, from grayish brown to dark reddish brown; the stipe is white, very fragile, and usually clothed with a fibrillose scaly coating below (and sometimes above) the ring, which usually is somewhat wooly on the underside and striate above. The abundant pointed pleurocystidia are an important microscopic characteristic. The name is derived from radial striations of the cap, which usually do not develop until specimens are rather old. P. longistriata occurs solitary to scattered to gregarious in mixed forests, often ones containing alder. It was named from a collection made near Seattle, appears to be restricted to the Pacific Coast, and is more abundant in the PNW than in California. Many of the other ringed psathyrellas were described as new by Alexander Smith in his 1972 monograph of the genus and are very poorly known.
