Photographs are accompanied by distribution maps, species descriptions, synonymy, and links to additional resources. An easy to use identification key is provided for vascular plants.
Developed and hosted by the University of Washington Herbarium at the Burke Museum, this site brings together 93,723 photographs and contributions from numerous photographers and botanists.
Washington is home to an estimated 3,438 species of vascular plants, 2,576 species of macrofungi, and 1,195 species of lichenized fungi across a diverse array of landscapes from lush coastal rainforests to dry sagebrush plains, high alpine meadows and much more in between.
The Burke Herbarium and its partners have also released wildflower identification apps for Washington and Idaho based in part on content from the Burke Herbarium Image Collection. The macrofungal portion of the Image Collection web site reproduces photographs and species descriptions from Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest, published by Timber Press.
Includes all flowering plants, conifers, ferns and fern-allies.
Covers mushrooms and other non-lichenized fungi that form multicellular fruiting bodies large enough to be seen with the unaided eye.
Lichens are composite organisms composed of fungal species in a symbiotic relationship with algae and/or cyanobacteria. Although lichens are classified and named based on the fungal component, they are here presented separately from fungi for convenience of access.
