Distribution: Widely distributed on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; Alaska to California, east across North America to the Atlantic Coast.

Habitat: Roadsides, fields, shorelines, wastelots, and other disturbed, open areas at low to middle elevations.

Flowers: July-October

Origin: Introduced from Europe

Growth Duration: Perennial

Conservation Status: Not of concern

Description:
General:

Coarse aromatic perennial from a stout rhizome, glabrous throughout, 4-15 dm. tall.

Leaves:

Leaves numerous, 1-2 dm. long and nearly half as wide, usually sessile, pinnatifid, with winged rachis, the pinnae again pinnatifid, with broadly winged rachis, the pinnules often again toothed.

Flowers:

Heads numerous, commonly 20-200, the inflorescence with a broad, rounded top, the disk about 5-10 mm. wide; involucre bracts imbricate, dry, the margins and tips papery; corollas all tubular, 5-toothed, yellow; pappus a minute crown.

Fruits:

Achenes 5-ribbed, glandular.
