Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; Alaska to California, east to the Rocky Mountains, also in northeastern North America.

Habitat: Open to dense moist forests from low elevations to subalpine.

Flowers: May-July

Description:
General:

Perennial herbs from extensive rhizomes, the freely-branched stems 5-10 dm. tall, glabrous throughout or pubescent on the lower third.

Leaves:

Leaves cauline, ovate to oblong-lanceolate, 5-12 cm. long, with clasping bases and acuminate tips.

Flowers:

Flowers usually single, bell-shaped, borne beneath the leaves, the pedicle attached to the slender, glabrous peduncle at a sharp angle; tepals 6, distinct, white with a greenish tinge, 9-15 mm. long, oblong-lanceolate, the tips recurved, the inner series clasping the stamens; stamens 6, unequal, the filaments of the outer series much shorter than those of the inner series; style 1, thick 4-5 mm. long.

Fruits:

Fruit a globose berry, yellow to red, about 1 cm. long.
