Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; Alaska to California, east to the Rocky Mountains, and east across most of Canda to the Atlantic Coasl.

Habitat: Open, dry to moist subalpine and alpine slopes.

Flowers: June-August

Description:
General:

Mat-forming perennial from rhizomes, the flowering stems leafless, 4-8 cm. tall.

Leaves:

Leaves from the horizontal stems trifoliate and petiolate; leaflets obovate, 1-3 cm. long, truncate and 3-5 toothed at the tip.

Flowers:

Inflorescence of 2-15 flowers in a tight cluster on the peduncle; calyx saucer-shaped, the 5 lobes 2.5-3.5 mm. long, the 5 alternating bracteoles shorter and narrower; petals 5, pale yellow, oval to spatulate, about half as long as the sepals; stamens 5, alternate with the petals; pistils 5-15, the styles 1 mm. long, lateral.

Fruits:

Achenes ovoid, 1.5 mm. long.
