Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in central and northern Washington; British Columbia to central Washington.

Habitat: Talus slopes and other rocky places in alpine areas.

Perennial from a short, woody base, lightly covered with short, white, woolly hairs that may disappear by flowering time.

Basal leaves oblanceolate, up to 20 cm. long including the winged petiole, and 3 cm. wide, the basal leaved sometimes tufted on short, separate shoots; cauline leaves well developed, reduced upward, becoming sessile toward the top of the stem.

Heads several in a flat-topped inflorescence, the heads somewhat nodding; involucre 7-12 mm. high, the bracts with short hairs on the black tips; rays 8-16 mm. long, yellow.
