Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest from Stevens Pass area south; central Washington to Oregon.

Habitat: Meadows and moist, open hillsides at middle to high elevations in the mountains.

Fibrous-rooted perennial from a short, stout rhizome, 5-10 dm. tall, mostly glabrous throughout.

Basal and lowermost cauline leaves large and persistent, broadly oblanceolate to obovate, 1.5-3.5 dm. long and 2-7 cm wide; middle and upper cauline leaves progressively reduced and becoming sessile.

Heads many in an elongate inflorescence; involucre narrow, its bracts 5-6, in a single series and equal, 7-9 mm. long, the mid-vein thickened; corollas usually 5, all tubular and yellowish.

Achenes prominently several-nerved.
