Habitat: Open, rocky places in the alpine, occasionally at middle elevatins, especially on talus slopes.

Glabrous perennial from a short, woody stem, 0.5-2 dm. tall.

Basal leaves well developed and persistent, up to10 cm. long including the petiole, and 3.5 cm. wide, mostly pinnatifid to lyrate-pinnatifid, but occasionally simple and cordate; stem leaves few and much reduced.

Heads several in a compact cluster; involucre 5-9 mm. high, the bracteoles few and well developed or wanting; rays 5-10 mm. long.
