Distribution: Occurring east of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to California, east to Montana, Wyoming and Utah.

Habitat: Dry, open areas from and foothills, especially in lithosol.

Perennial from a stout root, 5-30 cm. tall, the naked peduncle glabrous or with fine, short hairs, the juice milky.

Leaves all basal, crowded, narrow, elongate, rarely over 1 cm. wide, 20-50 times as long as wide, the margins more or less wavy.

Heads solitary; involucre 15-25 mm. high, its bracts lanceolate or narrower, with a dark mid-rib; corollas all ligulate, yellow; pappus of 1-30 tapered, bristle-like, white scales, less than 0.5 mm. wide, the fruiting heads forming a dandelion-like ball at maturity.

Achenes 8-10 mm. long, with fine hairs on the terminal portion.
