Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington, mostly from Mt. Rainier south; Washington to California.

Habitat: Open slopes and meadows from middle to high elevations in the mountains.

Flowers: June-August

Origin: Native

Growth Duration: Perennial

Conservation Status: Not of concern

Pollination: Bees, flies, beetles, wasps

Description:
General:

Glabrous perennial from a stout root, 3-35 cm. tall, sometimes with a single small leaf on the naked peduncle, the juice milky.

Leaves:

Leaves all basal, 5-15 cm. long, up to 3 cm. wide, some or all of them coarsely few-toothed to laciniate-pinnatifid, occasionally all entire.

Flowers:

Heads solitary; involucre 12-20 mm. high, its bracts sub-equal, thin, pointed, the outer broader than the inner, lanceolate, usually dotted with dark purple; corollas all ligulate, yellow; pappus of 30-50 barbellate, unequal, capillary bristles.

Fruits:

Achenes 5-8 mm long, with fine hairs on the terminal portion.
