Distribution: Occurring east of the Cascades crest in Washington; Washington to California, east to the Great Plains.

Habitat: Dry, often sandy places in the foothills and plains.

Perennial from a taproot and stout, branching base, the several stems 1-9 dm. tall, somewhat white-woolly toward the base.

Leaves tufted at the base, once or twice pinnatifid, with linear segments; cauline leaves similar but few and reduced.

Heads several in an open inflorescence; involucre 7-10 mm. high, the bracts broad, papery, pale yellowish above and greenish below; flowers all tubular and perfect, yellow, the lobes shorter than the tube; pappus of several translucent scales not over 1 mm. long.

Achenes narrow and elongate, 4- angled.
