Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to California, east to the Rocky Mountains and Texas.

Habitat: Gravelly soil in open, dry to moist woods, coastal bluffs to moderate elevations in the mountains.

Flowers: June-August

Origin: Native

Conservation Status: Not of concern

Description:
General:

Deciduous shrub, 1-3 m. tall, the branches slender, arching, the bark deep reddish-gray.

Leaves:

Leaf blades broadly ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 4-7 cm. long, green above and paler and woolly below, with 15-25 lobes, the lobes with fine teeth; leaves alternate, the petioles 10-15 mm. long.

Flowers:

Inflorescence a diffuse, pubescent panicle, 10-17 cm. long; calyx saucer-shaped, deeply 5-lobed; flowers about 5 mm. broad, the 5 oval, creamy-white petals slightly exceeding the sepals; stamens 20; pistils 5, 1.5 mm. long.

Fruit:

Achene 2 mm. long, covered with short, stiff hairs.
