Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; Alaska to California, east to the Rocky Mountains of Canada and the U.S.

Habitat: Meadows and other open places in the mountains, usually at high elevations.

Flowers: June-August

Origin: Native

Growth Duration: Perennial

Conservation Status: Not of concern

Pollination: Bees, flies, beetles, wasps

Description:
General:

Slender perennials 3-35 cm. tall, the stem leafless and covered with fine, stellate hairs, and with milky juice.

Leaves:

Leaves all basal, tufted, entire and glabrous, 1-10 cm. long and 3-15 mm. wide, with a short petiole.

Flowers:

Heads solitary to several in an elongate inflorescence; involucre 6-8 mm. high, this and the upper peduncle covered with grey, stellate hairs and usually with some long, blackish bristles as well.
