Perennial from rhizomes and tuberous roots, erect, 6-20 dm. tall, the stem glabrous below the inflorescence.

Leaves scabrous, lanceolate to lance-linear, with short petioles, 8-16 cm. long and 6-30 mm. wide, entire and flat.

Heads several, the disk 12-23 mm. wide, yellow; involucral bracts lance-linear, pointed, loose, the marginal hairs inconspicuous; receptacle chaffy throughout; pappus of 2 readily deciduous awns.

Achenes clasped by the inner involucral bracts.
