Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; Alaska to California, east across North America to the Atlantic Coast.

Habitat: Wet places, bogs, and mountain meadows.

Flowers: May-July

Description:
General:

Tufted and rhizomatous perennial, the culms 3-8 dm. tall.

Leaves:

Sheaths closed, slightly rough; ligules 1.5-3 mm. long, truncate to obtuse, somewhat lacerate; blades flat to folded, erect, 2-5 mm. broad.

Flowers:

Inflorescence a loose panicle 7-20 cm. long, the slender branches ascending; spikelets 4- to 7-flowered, ovate in outline; glumes papery, 1-nerved, the first about 0.8 mm. long, the second, 1.2 mm. long; lemmas nearly 2 mm. long, broad, firm, 7-nerved to the scarious upper margin, the nerves non-convergent; paleas about equal to the lemmas, abruptly and minutely notched; stamens 2.
