Distribution: Widely distributed on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; Alaska to Baja California, east to the Great Plains and east across Canada to the Atlantic Coast.

Habitat: Common in moist woods and meadows from sea level to subalpine.

Flowers: April-August

Description:
General:

Herbaceous perennial from a short rhizome, the 1-several pubescent stems 3-7 dm. tall.

Leaves:

Basal leaves several, the blades lyrate-pinnatifid, up to 3 dm. long; leaflets 9-23, triangular-ovate to cordate, the terminal one much the largest, up to 15 cm. wide; cauline leaves 2-5, with leaf-like stipules.

Flowers:

Flowers several in an open, asymmetrical inflorescence; calyx saucer-shaped, the 5 lobes 4-5 mm. long, reflexed, alternating with 5 simple bracteoles; petals 5, yellow, 4-6 mm. long; stamens and pistils numerous.

Fruits:

Achenes compressed, elliptic, 3 mm. long, the style bent and divided at mid-length, the lower segment 4 mm. long, reddish, hooked at the tip, the upper segment 1-1.5 mm. long, yellowish.
