Distribution: Occurring west of the Cascades crest in the coastal counties of Washington; Alaska to California.

Herbaceous, scapose perennial with thick, reddish-tinged stolons that are covered with silky, spreading hairs, the scapes 3-10 cm. tall, shorter than the leaves.

Basal leaves numerous, the reddish-tinged petioles 4-10 cm. long; leaves trifoliate, the leaflets petiolate, the terminal one with a petiole to 10 mm. long; leaflets leathery, obovate, 1.5-4 cm. long, with coarse, rounded serrations above mid-length, deep green, shining and glabrous above, grayish-silky below.

Inflorescence of 5-15 flowers in an open cluster; calyx saucer-shaped, silky, with 5 elliptic bracteoles alternate with the 5 lanceolate lobes; petals 5, white, obovate-orbicular, 12-16 mm. long; stamens 20-25; pistils numerous.

Fruit an achene, 1/3 immersed in the hemispheric, hairy receptacle, which becomes enlarged to over 1.5 cm. broad, fleshy and red.
