Distribution: Chiefly east of the Cascades in Washington; British Columbia to Oregon, east to Montana.
Habitat: Dry, open areas from the plains to moderate elevations in the mountains.

Broad shrubs up to 2 m. tall, the twigs flexible and covered with a felt-like layer of white hairs.
Leaves 2-7 cm. long and 0.5-3 mm. wide, 1-3 nerved, usually white-woolly.
Heads in terminal, rounded clusters; involucre 6-13 mm. high, narrow, its bracts 20-25, imbricate, papery; flowers all tubular, 6.5-11 mm. long, yellow.
Achenes usually pubescent.
