Distribution: Occurring in scattered locations east of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to Arizona, east to the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains.

Habitat: Dry wasteland, disturbed areas.

Flowers: May-July

Description:
General:

Finely puberulent annual, the culms 1-3 dm. tall, branched at the base.

Leaves:

Sheaths open; auricles very slender, 1 mm. long; ligules fringed, about 1 mm. long; blades flat, 2-3 mm. broad.

Flowers:

Inflorescence a strongly flattened spike, 1-1.5 cm. long, ovate-oblong; spikelets 11-19, solitary, borne flatwise to the rachis, divergent, 6-8 mm. long, closely crowded; glumes subequal, acuminate to short-awned; lemmas rounded on the back, acuminate to short-awned.
