Usually glabrous, leafy annual up to 2.5 m. tall.

Leaves numerous, alternate, well distributed along the stem, up to 20 cm. long and 8 cm. wide; sharply serrate; leaves oblanceolate to obovate, the lower short-petiolate, the middle and upper becoming sessile to clasping.

Heads whitish, discoid, several, cylindric, in a flat-topped to elongate inflorescence; involucre 10-17 mm. high, the base swollen, with a single series of equal bracts; corolla narrowly tubular, the outer flowers pistillate, the inner perfect or sterile; style branches flattened.
