Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to California, east to Alberta, Montana, Utah, and Arizona.

Habitat: Dry or gravelly soil, sea level to mid-elevations in the mountains.

Flowers: April-August

Description:
General:

Finely appressed-puberulent annual, the stems freely-branched, 0.3-4.5 dm. tall.

Leaves:

Leaves mostly opposite, short-petiolate, the blades oblong-lanceolate, 1-2.5 cm. long.

Flowers:

Flowers on short pedicels in the axils of alternate leaves; calyx tube cup-shaped, 1 mm. long, 4-lobed; petals 4, white to rose, bi-lobed; stamens 8; stigma entire; ovary inferior, 4-celled.

Fruits:

Capsule 1.5-2.5 cm. long, linear, slightly curved; seeds with a tuft of pale yellow hairs at the tip.
