Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to California, east to the Rocky Mountains.
Habitat: Wet places at mid-elevations in the mountains.

Glabrous, glaucous perennial from branching rhizomes, the stems many, simple or basally branched, erect, 1-5 dm. tall.
Leaves opposite, numerous and overlapping, sessile and slightly clasping, oblong-lanceolate to ovate, obtuse, entire to denticulate, 1.5-4.5 cm. long, gradually reduced upward.
Inflorescence of terminal, bracteate racemes; pedicels 5-20 mm. long; calyx tube 1.5 mm. long, the 4 lobes 2-4 mm. long, rose to purplish-tinged; petals 4, 4-8 mm. long, notched, light pink to deep rosy-purple; stamens 8; stigma entire; ovary inferior, 4-celled.
Capsule 4-7 cm. long, linear, curved, glabrous; seeds with a tuft of white hairs at the tip.
