Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to California, east to the Rocky Mountains, northern Great Plains, and Great Lakes region.
Habitat: Common in dry, open meadows and grasslands to lightly wooded areas.

Glabrous annual, the stems very freely-branched, 3-10 dm. tall.
Leaves alternate almost throughout, petiolate, narrowly lanceolate to linear, mostly entire; leaves of the main stem 3-7 cm. long, but those on the side branches much smaller.
Flowers in few-flowered, lax racemes terminating the numerous branches; bracts linear; pedicels 5-20 mm. long; calyx tube narrowly funnel-shaped, 2-12 mm. long, 4-lobed; petals 4, rose to pale pink, obovate, bi-lobed, 3-12 mm. long; stamens 8; stigma mostly entire; ovary inferior, 4-celled.
Capsule 1.5-2.5 cm. long, linear, club-shaped; seed with a tuft of pale yellow hairs on the tip.
