Distribution: Occurring west of the Cascades crest in lowland western Washington; Alaska to Washington.

Habitat: Thickets, open clearings, forests, and shores typically at low elevations.

Erect, arching deciduous shrubs to 5 m. tall.

Leaves alternate, the blades elliptic to ovate-elliptic, rarely obovate, margins flat, 7-13 cm. long, with petioles 0-3 mm. long. Fresh leaves strongly wrinkled or bulging between lateral veins on upper surface.

Inflorescences 8-32-flowered, lax; flowers 5-7 mm., closed; hypanthium shallowly cup-shaped; sepals glabrous with shaggy margins, petals erect-incurved, pink, red, greenish pink, or maroon, margins pink; stamens 20-23; pistils 4-5.

Pomes bright to dark red, shiny, about 8-12 × 7-11 mm., 4-5 seeded.
