Distribution: Occurring chiefly east of the Cascades crest and along the lower Columbia River in Washington; British Columbia to California, east across North America to the Atlantic Coast.
Habitat: Open and disturbed areas at low to mid elevations where seasonally moist.

Fibrous-rooted annual, 3-12 dm. tall, with scanty foliage.
Leaves pinnatifid or bipinnatifid, the ultimate segments linear or linear-elliptic, or the upper leaves sometimes entire;
Heads fairly numerous, on long slender peduncles; involucre 5-9 mm. high, the bracts in two series, joined at the base, the outer bracts shorter and linear; ray flowers orange-yellow, 1-2 cm. long, with a prominent reddish-brown blotch at the base; disk flowers darker; receptacle flat, covered with chaffy, linear, pointed bracts.
Achenes black, 2-3 mm long, without wings or beak, the two pappus teeth minute or wanting.
