Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; Alaska to California, east to the Rocky Mountains and Great Lakes region.
Habitat: Meadows, grasslands, forest openings, and slopes at moderate elevations in the mountains.

Has thinner, narrower, and more pointed leaves than var. dixoni, and is found at middle to high elevations in the mountains.
