Distribution: Occurring chiefly east of the Cascades crest in Washington; southern British Columbia to California.
Habitat: Meadows, forest edge, forest openings, and light forest understory from low to middle elevations.

Perennial from a woody rhizome, 4-10 dm. tall.
Leaves mostly toward the base, upper and middle cauline leaves strongly reduced; leaves long-petiolate, with broad, palmately-cleft blade up to 2 dm. long and 2.5 dm. wide, the segments again coarsely toothed or lobed; leaves green above, thinly white-woolly below.
Heads several in a raceme; involucre 10-17 mm. high, the disk 12-30 mm. wide; disk flowers yellow, ray flowers wanting; pappus of numerous capillary bristles.
Achene prominently several-nerved.
