Distribution: Occurring in the Olympic and Cascade Mountains of Washington; Alaska to Oregon, east to Montana, and east across Canada to Quebec.

Habitat: Open rocky or gravelly, wet or dry sites, from middle elevations to the alpine, descending to sea level northward.

Flowers: July-September

Description:
General:

Herbaceous, rhizomatous perennial, the stems 3-15 dm. tall.

Leaves:

Leaves highly variable, chiefly cauline, from entire to deeply lobed, the lobes pointing forward, the lobes again cut; leaves tomentose beneath and green and shining above.

Flowers:

Inflorescence a narrow panicle; heads relatively large and broad, the involucre 3-5 mm. high and 4-8 mm. wide, the bracts sometimes with dark margins; corollas all tubular, the outer 8-15 pistillate; disk flowers 20-40; pappus none; receptacle without hairs.
