Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to California, east to Alberta and Wyoming.

Habitat: Rocky places in the mountains at rather high elevations.

Rhizomatous perennial, 2-5 dm. tall, several-stemmed from a short, woody base.

Leaves white-woolly beneath and green above, the lower ones bipinnatifid, 2-5 cm. long, the short, narrow ultimate segments often again toothed; upper leaves reduced, those of the inflorescence often entire.

Inflorescence elongate, narrow, spike-like; involucre 3.5-4 mm. high, dry and glabrous; corollas all tubular, yellowish, fertile, the outer ones pistillate, 9-12, the inner perfect, 15-35; receptacle naked; pappus none.

Achenes glabrous.
