Perennial from a branching crown, the stems 0.5-3 dm. tall.

Leaves alternate, gray-silky with appressed hairs; basal leaves tufted and persistent, petiolate, the blade 0.5-3 cm. long, trifid or palmatifid into narrow segments, often again divided; cauline leaves few and reduced, often entire.

Heads few in a spike-like raceme; involucre 3-4.5 mm. high, densely woolly, its bracts dark-margined; corollas all tubular, pale yellow, with hairs near the tip; receptacle naked; pappus none.

Achenes sparsely long-hairy.
