Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; Alaska to Oregon and Nevada, east across much of North America to the Atlantic Coast.
Habitat: Meadow, open forests and rocky slopes, mid- to high elevations in the mountains.

Glabrous perennial herbs from an onion-like bulb, the simple stem 1.5-7 dm. tall.
Leaves mostly basal, linear, glaucous, 1-2.5 dm. long and 2-15 mm. broad; cauline leaves few, reduced upward.
Inflorescence from a few-flowered raceme to a many-flowered, freely-branched panicle over 3 dm. long; pedicels 1-3.5 cm. long, ascending; perianth greenish-white, the 6 tepals spreading, distinct, ovate to oblong-obovate, obtuse, 8-11 mm. long, not clawed; the yellowish gland at the base of each tepal obcordate; stamens 6, about as long as the tepals; styles 3, distinct, about 3 mm. long.
Capsule 15-20 mm. long.
