Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to California, east to Montana, Idaho and Nevada.

Habitat: Prairies, balds, meadows, and forest openings, often where seasonally dry, from low to middle elevations in the mountains.

Flowers: May-August

Origin: Native

Conservation Status: Not of concern

Description:
General:

Scapose, stout perennial, 2-7 dm. tall, somewhat hairy when young, the juice milky.

Leaves:

Leaves all basal, oblanceolate to broadly linear, entire to deeply pinnatifid, 10-25 cm. long and 1-3 cm. wide.

Flowers:

Head solitary, large and many-flowered; involucre 1.5-4 cm. high, its outer bracts broad and short, the inner narrower and elongate; corollas all ligulate, yellow.

Fruits:

Achene body 4-7 mm. long, tapering to a slender beak 2-4 times as long.
