Distribution: Occurring east of the Cascades crest in north-central and eastern Washington; Yukon Territory to Nevada, east across much of North America to the Atlantic Coast.

Habitat: Moist or wet meadows, stream banks, and moist low ground; tolerant of alkali.

Flowers: May-July

Description:
General:

Glabrous perennial from a short, woody base and fleshy-fibrous roots, the stems clustered, 2-6 dm. tall.

Leaves:

Basal leaves long-petiolate with broad, cordate, serrate blades 2.5-10 cm. long and 1.5-8 cm. wide, or occasionally some of them trifoliate with elliptic leaflets; cauline leave few, trifoliate, short-petiolate, with coarser and sharper teeth than the lower leaves.

Flowers:

Inflorescence of compound umbels, compact and densely flowered, 1.5-4 cm. wide, the rays up to 3.5 cm. long at maturity; flowers bright yellow; calyx teeth 5, well-developed; involucre none, involucels inconspicuous.

Fruits:

Fruit oblong, 2-4 mm. long, glabrous, with prominent, slightly raised ribs.
