Distribution: It is a widespread but uncommon species that fruits early in the spring in a variety of habitats including montane conifer forests.

Identification Notes:

Verpa conica has a conic thimble-like cap that hangs free from the stipe apex. The surface of the cap is smooth or slightly wrinkled to irregular but not strongly so. The stipe is ivory to cream with brownish or ochraceous blushes, and often has a banded pattern on its surface.
