Habitat: Moist, shady forest understory to relatively dry forest edge from low to middle elevations in the mountains.

Scapose, rhizomatous, herbaceous perennial, the scape 2-4 dm. long.

Leaves basal, 1-3 dm. long, long-petiolate, biternate or incompletely triternate, the leaflets ovate-cordate, 3-lobed, sparsely pubescent, the petioles with soft, brown hairs near the base.

Inflorescence a 10- to 30-flowered, open, nodding panicle; pedicels recurved, slender; flowers white; perianth 5-8 mm. long, composed of 18-21 segments, the outer 6-9 (bracts) graduated in length, deciduous; the next 6 inner (sepals) longer, sharply reflexed; petals 6, shorter than the sepals, reflexed, narrow, and claw-like up to the ovate, hooded blade; stamens 6, the filaments flattened, erect, 4-7 mm. long, purplish, glandular-pubescent; pistil narrowed to a short style; stigma cup-like.
