Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; Alaska to California, east to the Atlantic Coast north of Virginia.

Habitat: Shallow, standing or slowly moving water.

Submersed plants with very slender stems, often creeping along the bottom.

Leaves numerous, alternate, 0.3-1 cm. long, 3-parted and the base, then dichotomously or irregularly 1-3 times divided, the segments slender and flat, the ultimate ones strongly acuminate; bladders borne on the leaves, often few, 1-2 mm. wide.

Flowers 2-9 in a lax raceme at the end of an emergent peduncle 4-15 cm. long; calyx deeply 2-lobed, the lobes entire; corolla bilabiate, yellow, the proper tube very short, the spur poorly developed, about half as long as the lower lip; the broad lower lip 4-8 mm. long, the base not raised, scarcely lobed; upper lip about half as long as the lower, shallowly notched; stamens 2, ovary superior.
