Superficially similar to true chanterelles in the genus Cantharellus but easily distinguished by the heavily scaled cap and hollow stem. Cap is generally bright orange but does fade in the rain. Underside and stem are cream-colored. General body shape is cylindrical, vase-shaped or trumpet-like, and scales on the cap and inside the vase of the hollow stem can be quite large and shingled.
