Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to Washington, east to the Rocky Mountains.

Habitat: Subalpine and alpine wet meadows and slopes, blooming as the snow recedes.

Flowers: May-August

Origin: Native

Description:
General:

Herbaceous perennial from strong, fibrous roots, glabrous throughout.

Leaves:

Leaves alternate, the basal long-petiolate, with broad, membranous stipules, the blade palmately cleft or divided into 5 obovate, 3-lobed, toothed segments; cauline leaves 2-3, short-petiolate below and sessile above.

Flowers:

Flowers solitary on peduncles 2-15 cm. long; sepals 5-9, ovate to obovate, about 15 mm. long, greenish-white to cream or yellow; petals none; stamens numerous, the outer 5-15 petaloid, oblong, 2-5 mm. long; pistils numerous, tapered to a stout, curved style.

Fruits:

Follicles several in a globose cluster, 8-11 mm. long, strongly nerved transversely.
