Distribution: Occurring chiefly west of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to California, east to Montana, further eastward across the northern U.S. and southern Great Plains and Canada to eastern North America.

Habitat: Roadsides, fields, wastelots, and other disturbed open areas.

Erect, pubescent annual, the 1-several stems 1-4 dm. tall, freely-branched.

Leaves trifoliate, leaflets linear-oblanceolate, 8-25 mm. long; stipules attached to the petioles, extending into narrowly awl-shaped free tips 5-10 mm. long.

Inflorescence of many-flowered heads, 5-25 mm. long and 10-13 mm. thick, axillary as well as terminal on the many branches; flowers 5-6 mm. long; calyx with plumose, appressed, aligned hairs, the 5 teeth bristle-tipped, twice as long as the tube, surpassing the white or pale pink, pea-like corolla; banner only slightly reflexed.

Pod indehiscent, 1-seeded.
