Distribution: Occurring west of the Cascades crest in Washington; southwestern Washington to California.

Habitat: Stream banks and moist bottom lands, mostly at low elevations.

Flowers: July-August

Description:
General:

Perennial herbs from rhizomes, the square stems simple or branched, 2-7 dm. tall, hairy throughout, with long, coarse, spreading hairs on the angles and finer, sticky hairs on the sides.

Leaves:

Leaves opposite, petiolate, the lower leaves with petioles 1-4 cm. long, the blades lance-triangular to elliptic, broadly rounded at the base, 3.5-9 cm. long and 1-4 cm. wide, with rounded teeth.

Flowers:

Inflorescence a series of verticels in the upper leaf axils, the leaves reduced upward to small bracts; calyx 5-6 mm. long, the 5 teeth broadly triangular, shorter than the tube, somewhat hairy, spine-tipped; corolla two-lipped, 9-14 mm. long, the tube surpassing the calyx, purplish with white spots, the upper lip slightly cupped, enclosing the 4 stamens, the lower lip spreading, 3-lobed, the central lobe much the largest, the tube with an internal ring of hairs; style 2-parted; ovary 2-celled, superior.
