Distribution: Chiefly east of the Cascades in Washington; Washington south to California, east to Wyoming.

Habitat: Sagebrush plains, meadows and ponderosa pine forests.

Herbaceous perennial from a stout taproot and branched crown, but without rhizomes; stems 2-15 dm. tall, glabrous to stiff-hairy or stellate below, finely stellate above.

Leaves alternate, highly variable, palmately shallowly to very deeply lobed, the lobes with a few coarse, rounded teeth.

Inflorescence of many-flowered, simple to compound racemes, spike-like to open and lax, the pedicels 1-10 mm. long; calyx 5-lobed, 3.5-9 mm. long, variously pubescent; petals light pinkish to deep pink, 1-2 cm. long, clawed, obovate and notched; stamens 40-70, freed from the staminal tube in 2-3 series, the stamens united in groups; ovary superior, the carpels 5-10 in a ring around a central axis; styles equal to the number of carpels, elongate, stigmatic full length.

Capsule 2.5-3 mm. long, with a beak 0.3-0.7 mm. long.
