Distribution: Widely distributed on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; Alaska to California, east to the Rocky Mountains, northern Great Plains, Great Lakes region, and northeastern North America.

Habitat: Moist ground in woodlands and forests, from low to middle elevations.

Perennial, glabrous herbs from wide-spreading rhizomes, the scapose stem 1.5-4 dm. tall.

Leaves basal, numerous, the blades rotund to obovate, leathery, entire to serrulate, 3-8 cm. long and broad, dark green and shiny on the upper surface, somewhat purplish beneath, not mottled; petioles at least as long as the blades.

Flowers 10-25 in an elongate raceme; pedicels 3-8 mm. long, subtended by linear-lanceolate bractlets of equal length; flowers 10-15 mm. broad; calyx 5-lobed, the lobes pointed, 2.5-4 mm. long; petals 5, distinct, 5-7 mm. long, pinkish to rose or purplish-red; stamens 10, bent inward, the anthers without awns, inverted, opening by 2 pores on short tubes; style strongly curved, 5-8 mm. long, with a collar below the stigma; ovary superior.
