Distribution: Occurring chiefly east of the Cascades crest in Washington; Chelan County, Washington to California, east to Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, and New Mexico.

Habitat: Moist or dry open woods, rocky slopes and meadows, from moderate to high elevations.

Perennial with thick, fleshy roots and slender rhizomes, the stems ascending to erect, 4-angled, 1.5-4 dm. tall, glabrous below and glandular-pubescent above.

Leaves opposite, sessile, linear to lanceolate, acuminate, 3-10 cm. long and 3-10 mm. wide.

Flowers many in axillary and terminal, leafy-bracteate cymes; sepals 5, oblong-lanceolate, scarious-margined, 3.5-5 mm. long; petals 5, white, twice as long as the sepals, bi-lobed 1/3 to 1/5 their length.

Capsule ovoid, slightly shorter than the calyx.
