Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in the northern half of Washington, southern British Columbia to northern California.

Habitat: Open, rocky slopes near timberline in the mountains, chiefly on serpentine.

Terrestrial perennials, stem decumbent to ascending, stolons not present.

Leaves monomorphic, erect, 1-3.5 dm; petiole up to 1/4 length of leaf, sparsely scaly; scales pale tan, abruptly decreasing in size distally; blade narrowly lanceolate, 2-pinnate, barely narrowed at base; pinnae ovate, overlapping, folded inward and turned horizontally, 0.5-2 cm; base truncate to oblique, acroscopic pinnules nearest base not enlarged; apex broadly acute; microscales narrowly lanceolate, with scarce projections, sparse, generally confined to costa of upper and lower surfaces; pinnules somewhat stalked, rounded, acroscopic appendage not well developed, margins entire to slightly toothed, apex rounded.

Indusia entire or weakly irregularly toothed; spores dark brown to somewhat black.
