Distribution: Widely distributed on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to California, east to Idaho and Montana.

Habitat: Dry to moist, partially shaded to open areas from low to middle elevations in the mountains.

Flowers: May-July

Description:
General:

Erect, deciduous shrub 1.5-2.5 m. tall.

Leaves:

Leaves opposite, petiolate, ovate to elliptic, usually remotely denticulate or dentate, with marginal hairs, 2.5-7 cm. long and 1-4 cm. wide.

Flowers:

Inflorescence of terminal racemes and solitary flowers in the axils of upper leaves; calyx usually glabrous, bell-shaped, the 4 lobes ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 5-6 mm. long; petals 4, white, oblong, 10-20 mm. long, obtuse or rounded; stamens 25-40, unequal; styles as long as the stamens, fused most of their length, the 4 style branches stigmatic on the inner surface most of their length; ovary mostly inferior.

Fruits:

Capsule woody, ovate-elliptic, pointed at the ends, 6-10 mm. long, 4 celled.
