Distribution: Occurring from in southern Cascade Mountains from Mt. Adams south in Washington; Washington south to the Trinity Mountains of northwest California.

Habitat: Moist woods and stream banks at moderate to high elevations.

Flowers: May-June

Description:
General:

Perennial herbs from rhizomes, without stolons, the flower stems ascending to erect, 6-55 cm. tall, nearly glabrous or with stalked glands.

Leaves:

Leaves basal and cauline, the cauline leaves 0-3, alternate or opposite; stipules present; petioles usually present, cauline leaves sometimes sessile; leaf blades ovate or cordate, palmately veined, usually lobed, the base cordate or truncate, the margins with rounded teeth.

Flowers:

Inflorescence a terminal, 2- to 60-flowered raceme, sometimes one-sided; calyx attached to ovary most of its length, the 5 lobes white, greenish-white or yellowish-green; petals 5, greenish, greenish-yellow, or white, with a slender claw; stamens 5 or 10; carpels 2, fused almost the entire length.

Fruit:

Capsules obscurely 2-beaked.
