Distribution: Occurring east of the Cascades crest in Washington; Washington south to Oregon, east to Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and Utah.

Habitat: Open to dense moist woods at mid-elevations in the mountains.

Slender herbaceous perennial from rhizomes, the several leafless flowering stems up to 5 dm. tall, usually with 1-2 tiny, membranous bracts.

Leaves all basal, long-petiolate, the blades reniform to cordate, often purplish-tinged, 2-8 cm. broad and somewhat shorter, inconspicuously 5- to 7-lobed, sparsely short-hairy.

Inflorescence an elongate, one-sided raceme, blossoming upwards, 10- to 35-flowered; pedicels 0.5-1.5 mm. long; calyx top-shaped, 4-6 mm. long, greenish-white, the 5 lobes oblong; petals white to purplish tinged, 2-4 mm. long, spreading, usually tri-lobed into filiform segments about as long as the claw; stamens 5, opposite the calyx lobes.
