Distribution: Occurring in the Olympic Mountains in Washington; Alaska to California, east to Rocky Mountains, also in eastern Canada.

Habitat: Subalpine and alpine areas.

Flowers: June-August

Description:
General:

Acaulescent, tufted perennial from a branched, woody base, sticky throughout with wart-like glands.

Leaves:

Leaves odd-pinnate, 3-20 cm. long; leaflets 15-45, linear-lanceolate to narrowly oblong, 5-25 mm. long; stipules 6-12 mm. long, attached to the petiole over half their length.

Flowers:

Inflorescence of spike-like racemes 2-7 cm. long, on long peduncles, exceeding the leaves, 7-30 flowered; flowers cream-colored to reddish-purplish, 10-15 mm. long; calyx 2/3 as long as the corolla, black-hairy, the 5 teeth linear, roughly half as long as the tube; banner slightly upturned, wings broad, keel with a short, straight beak.

Fruits:

Pod 10-15 mm. long and 4-6 mm. broad, gray- to black-hairy, the upper suture deeply intruded.
