Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in the forested and mountainous areas of Washington; Alaska to California, east to the Rocky Mountains, and from the Great Lakes region to northeastern North America.

Habitat: Moist forests and wet meadows, from low elevations to the subalpine.

Flowers: June-August

Description:
General:

Small, perennial herbs with a simple stem 10-35 cm. tall, glabrous below the leaves and strongly glandular-pubescent above.

Leaves:

Leaves 2, opposite, glabrous, attached about mid-length on the stem, oblong-ovate to ovate or sub-orbicular, rounded to abruptly acute, 3-7 cm. long.

Flowers:

Inflorescence a terminal, bracteate, open, 5- to 25-flowered raceme, the bracts 3-7 mm. long; pedicles very slender, 4-8 mm. long; sepals and petals recurved, 1-veined, the upper sepal broadly lanceolate, 4-5 mm. long, the lateral pair lanceolate, slightly longer; 2 small petals shorter and narrower than the sepals; third petal (lip) 8-13 mm. long, projecting forward horizontally, obovate with a wedge-shaped base, abruptly contracted to a claw 1.5 mm. long, the tip shallowly notched; stamens and style fused to form a very slender column about 3 mm. long.
