Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; Alaska sto California, east to the Rocky Mountains and in eastern North America.

Habitat: Moist woods with high-humas soils, sea level to mid-elevations in the mountains.

Flowers: May-July

Description:
General:

Perennial, rhizomatous herbs; stems glabrous or papillose, erect, 3-15 cm.

Leaves:

Leaves leathery and glabrous, cauline but occasionally appear basal, alternate or appearing whorled, petiolate, elliptic to orbiculate, 1-2.5 cm long, with rounded teeth on margins.

Flowers:

Flowers solitary, radially symmetric, 1.5-2.5 cm broad; calyx fused at base, sepals 5; corolla white, petals 5, 1.5-2.5 cm broad; stamens 10, filaments broad at base and becoming slender, anthers without awns, dehiscing at 2 pores; pistil with 5 carpels, style straight, stigma with 5 lobes and no subtending hairs.

Fruits:

Fruits erect capsules, splitting lengthwise.
